He obtained access to a Xerox mainframe computer in the Materials research Laboratory at the University and he was given an unlimited amount of computer time and decided to repay this kindness by “ giving back “ in return for this gift something which would be considered to be of great value Initially the goal was to make available 10000 of the most consulted literary works at little or no charge ,and further to achieve this aim by the end of the 20th century. Most of the books in the collection are full texts of books in the public domain. At the end of 2007 the collection stood at 24000 books all are as far as possible free to download and are in computer compatible formats. Project Gutenberg ,named after a fifteenth century German printer Johannes Gutenberg has many affiliated projects around the World. In 2004 Michael Hart said “The mission of Project Gutenberg is simple: To encourage the creation and distribution of ebooks “the goal being “to provide as many ebooks in as many formats as possible for the entire world to read in as many languages as possible “ and “to break down the bars of ignorance and illiteracy “ This project is an admirable one well worth supporting maybe you can help as a volunteer or even avail yourself of the books on offer.
